Why do Shopify App Store rankings matter?
Shopify App Store ranking factors decide whether merchants ever find your app. Around 60% of Shopify app installs start with a search: merchants type a problem, scan the first few results, and most decide within the first screen. For most apps, Shopify search is the number one source of revenue. If you’re not near the top for the terms your merchants use, you’re invisible to most of the demand, however good the product is.
Ranking isn’t a vanity metric. It’s the difference between compounding organic installs and paying for every one.
What are the Shopify App Store ranking factors?
Shopify has never published its algorithm, but years of observation across hundreds of apps point to a consistent set of inputs. They fall into two groups: relevance signals, which decide whether you show up for a search at all, and quality signals, which decide how high.
- Keyword relevance. Whether your app name, subtitle, introduction, and description contain the words a merchant searched. The one factor you control directly.
- Install volume and velocity. How many merchants install, and how fast. Recent momentum counts, not just lifetime totals.
- Conversion rate. Of the merchants who see your listing, how many install. Strong conversion tells Shopify your app is a good answer for that query.
- Reviews and rating. Count, average, and recency. Trust signals that lift both ranking and the human decision to install.
- Retention. Whether merchants keep the app or uninstall quickly. High uninstall rates undercut everything above them. Across 400+ apps on Prys, the average app loses 30.71% of installs within 24 hours; the top quartile 22.80%.
- Built for Shopify badge. Shopify rewards apps that earn it with higher placement.
- Category. Correct category placement.
Which Shopify App Store ranking factor can you control?
Keyword placement. Reviews depend on installs, installs depend on ranking, and ranking depends in large part on the words in your listing. That circle means the one lever that doesn’t require you to already be winning is keyword relevance: putting the terms your merchants search into the fields that carry the most weight.
The more prominently you place a keyword, the higher you rank for it:
- App name (30 characters). The most weight. Combine your brand with a top keyword or two.
- App card subtitle (62 characters). Top SEO and AEO space. Use your top keywords.
- App introduction (100 characters). Several top keywords alongside your value proposition.
- App details (500 characters) and feature list (5 x 80 characters). Lower weight, but they count. Some repetition is fine.
- Search terms. Your top five, in the Partner Dashboard.
- Search title and meta description. For ranking on Google as well.
How do you pick the right keywords?
Not by volume alone. A high-traffic term you rank tenth for, or one that never converts to a paying plan, is worth less than a specific term that brings merchants who install and stay. Prioritize by revenue potential, which has three parts:
- Volume. How many merchants search it. Read it from the impressions and visibility of your exact-match keywords in Shopify Ads.
- Quality. How well your app converts for it, and how much the merchants it brings pay. Read it from the installs and revenue per keyword.
- Difficulty. How hard it is to beat the apps already ranking.
Sort your keywords into three tiers of four or five, and give tier one the strongest fields. Add valuable low-volume keywords and misspellings. New apps should start with niche keywords. Prys scores every keyword this way, its Potency score, using your own install and revenue data rather than guesses, so you spend your limited listing characters on the terms that actually pay.
“Rank keywords by revenue potential: quality, volume, difficulty. Then optimize the copy to balance SEO impact and human readability.”

How do you improve conversion once you rank?
Ranking gets the visit; the listing earns the install. The first screenshot, the subtitle, and the opening line of the description do most of the work, because that is all most merchants read before deciding. Treat the listing like a landing page: lead with the outcome, prove it with a clear first image and real reviews, and remove friction before the install button. The average listing turns 19.34% of visitors into installs; the top quartile 30.67%. See Shopify app store listing optimization for the field-by-field method.
How do you keep your Shopify App Store ranking?
Protect the quality signals, and keep iterating on the relevance ones:
- Check rankings a day or two after every change, and optimize if needed.
- Track rankings over time, and watch for new keyword opportunities in your data.
- Watch uninstalls, and fix the onboarding steps where merchants drop, since retention feeds back into ranking.
- Keep earning reviews. Ask happy merchants at the right moment, like after a support case is solved.
- Update the listing periodically.
Ranking is a position you defend with the same install, conversion, and retention data that won it. Copy optimization alone can double, even triple, Shopify search installs, and Prys Shopify app store SEO & AEO tracks your rank and keyword performance over time, so you see movement early, while it’s still cheap to fix.
